Kindness: It’s In Our DNA

Dual Language Immersion North County (DLINC) was founded as a tuition-free TK-8 charter school with a mission of bilingual education. But academics are only part of what we do. We are also committed to teaching our students respect for themselves, others, and the environment. And with that respect comes kindness.

DLINC’s culture of kindness and compassion brings so many benefits to our students and tight-knit school community. It fosters positive relationships between students that reduces bullying and rewards inclusivity. It encourages children to volunteer and give back to our community, helping them feel useful and develop empathy for others. And it creates a sense of belonging and pride in our school that extends beyond our classroom walls and into our community at large.

This year we hosted a school-wide fundraising event that focused on serving, not selling, to raise money for our facilities. DLINC students were encouraged to “pay it forward” by completing acts of kindness for others, which generated donations to our school. Along the way, we celebrated by creating a Kindness Tree, Pajama Day, Rock Star Day, Shine Bright Day, and a school-wide pizza party!  We delivered a huge box of blankets for newborn babies at the Tri-City Medical Center NICU, and snacks for the nurses. We decorated sack lunch bags for Brother Benno's Homeless Center Oceanside Soup Kitchen. We also made blue & yellow friendship bead bracelets for Down Syndrome Awareness and gifted bracelets to GiGi's Playhouse San Diego.

And in the end we surpassed expectations and raised $19,323 through 1,956 acts of kindness! Students had so much fun coming up with creative ways to help others, here are some highlights:

  • Alex (4th grade) wrote thank you notes and brought in a thoughtful gift and flower for his teacher

  • Emma (K) completed kindness cards for her teacher, principal and librarian

  • Sawyer (3rd) sang carols to elderly people in his neighborhood

  • Molly (3rd) handed out candy canes and clogged a few dances at Vista Del Lago Memory Care Center

  • Lucas (3rd) and Maddie (1st) picked up trash around their neighborhood

  • Sofia (4th) and Camilla (1st) volunteered at Toys for Joy

  • Many of our students wrote thank you notes, left snacks and drinks out for their delivery drivers, completed extra chores to help families and neighbors, and collected gently used books for our school library

But kindness is not just a fundraising tool - it’s part of our school culture. Throughout the year, we host kindness contests and service learning projects in our community. Our teachers are trained in restorative justice practices that build empathetic communities inside our classrooms. And ongoing initiatives such as the garden club, partnership with USAGain sustainable energy solutions, and on-campus recycling program inspire students to care about our environment.

There are so many ways that kindness is infused in DLINC’s DNA. Find out more and join our proud Wolfpack TK-8 tuition-free public school community today!
