Art & Music Thrives Here

Art and music education is so critical for young learners. Unfortunately, they are often the first subjects to be cut out of public school budgets. At DLINC tuition-free charter school, we understand the importance of fine arts in the development of young minds. In fact, Alba Garcia, our designated art and music teacher, has been a beloved member of our DLINC team for nearly a decade. Whether your child is a budding artist or simply enjoys expressing themselves, they’ll benefit from our art and music department.

Integrated Curriculum

Our weekly TK-8 music and art instruction is fully integrated into the curriculum of each grade level. From social studies to language arts, our teachers collaborate to enrich core classroom lessons with art and music. Art lessons utilize a variety of mediums - from markers in the youngest grades to paints and 3D projects in upper grades. Our music curriculum is centered on voice - students sing folk songs in Spanish, exploring Mexican culture while learning scales, rhythm, and how to sing in tune. 3rd and 4th graders sing a “Corrido” - a Mexican ballad that tells a story, teaching history and geography through metaphor. Students perform in class as well as at all-school assemblies for their parents and peers, and we even hear them singing songs in Spanish on the playground!

Widened Worldviews

DLINC music and art instruction is hands-on, but includes time spent examining the works of masters. From Salvador Dali to Diego Rivera, Wassily Kandinsky to Leonard Bernstein, our young artists explore contemporary and classical genres and styles. This often leads to interesting discussions - all in Spanish - about expression, composition, and the lives of artists around the world.

Risk Taking

Our young artists understand that there’s no “right” and “wrong” in self-expression. Participating is half the fun! Students can choose to share their finished artworks with the rest of class, even if they’re not perfect. By valuing innovation and risk taking, our students learn that creativity is an essential part of who they are.

Additional Opportunities

In our pre-pandemic years, art and music curriculum included field trips to local museums and performance halls, including attending Peter and the Wolf at the North State Symphony. We hope to reinstate these off-campus offerings during the upcoming school year, as well as an after-school Art Club for motivated makers.

DLINC art and music curriculum supports makers of all ages with integrated, exceptional learning opportunities. Find out more and enroll in our TK-8 public tuition-free charter school today!
