Dual Immersion is for English Learners Too

DLINC students represent a broad range of fluency. From first-time English and Spanish speakers to students looking to sharpen their skills in reading and writing, all of our TK-8 learners are reached through our innovative instruction model

Supporting Spanish Fluency

Many DLINC families whose heritage language is Spanish enroll here because they want their children to continue to develop their Spanish skills while learning English. In a mainstream school, they may be able to continue speaking in Spanish but reading and writing will not be emphasized. At DLINC, our native Spanish speaking students graduate being able to speak, read and write in both Spanish and English – that’s a wonderful outcome!

Making English Learning Successful… and Fun

All DLINC Spanish heritage students participate in two kinds of English Language Development (ELD). We offer a set time for “Designated ELD” each day, in which students learn the mechanics of the English language. During lessons that are given in English throughout the day, these learners experience “Integrated ELD”, which teaches English with a special emphasis on vocabulary. Our teachers are trained in ELD strategies – something that mainstream schools don’t offer. They often incorporate movement with the language that kids are learning, and use Realia – a strategy that moves away from books and flashcards to use objects from real life to improve understanding of other cultures and language. Realia can incorporate classroom items like desks, chairs, or signs, or items brought from outside, like brochures, toys or souvenirs. These strategies make language learning engaging and fun for DLINC learners of all ages.

English Learners and their Families are Welcome Here

English language learners thrive in a supportive environment at DLINC. We are a small school where all students get to know and help each other. Inside our classrooms, English learners are fully integrated with Spanish learners, and those friendships extend to lunchtime, recess, sports and clubs. Outside on the playground, our students communicate mostly in English, which is a great opportunity for English learners to try out new skills. Parents are encouraged to volunteer in our classrooms, and we welcome Spanish speaking volunteers - they often jump in and help with language learning, and our teachers love having them here!
