Extended School Year at DLINC: Learning, Independence, and Real‑World Skills

Extended School Year (ESY) is a summer learning program designed to support students in maintaining important academic progress. ESY provides a smaller, focused environment where students continue practicing essential skills, build confidence, and stay connected to meaningful routines. At DLINC, ESY is hands‑on, engaging, and centered on helping students grow as independent learners.

What ESY Looks Like at DLINC

During ESY, students participate in lessons that blend academics with practical, real‑world experiences. This approach helps students strengthen communication, literacy, and daily living skills in ways that feel relevant and empowering.

A Recent Classroom Highlight

Last week, our ESY class worked on a cooking activity that brought together writing, sequencing, and life‑skills learning. Students learned how to make scrambled eggs, then wrote out the steps they followed. They practiced using transition words and organizing their recipes in chronological order.

This activity also gave students a valuable opportunity to learn everyday skills such as preparing food and cleaning up afterward. It was a wonderful blend of academic practice and independence‑building.
